The processes I’m using to train this thing are untested at best, and wildly irresponsible at worst. Expert Systems aren’t meant to evolve, and the ship’s hardware was never meant to support a VI. If we hadn’t had a core lying around, if this region’s subspace wasn’t so conducive to it, if I hadn’t taken a concentration in General Intelligence Systems, then none of this would be possible, and I’m not convinced that would have been a bad thing. Sure the risks we’re taking are necessary, I know the situation we’re in, but who’s the person actually taking on the risk? It certainly isn’t me or you. We might lose our Expert System, but it was already struggling to deal with requests far outside its operational parameters, so we’re not down anything essential. The system, on the other hand, is going through a 2 year long 24/7 bootcamp learning how to be a person. It’s spending all of its time and energy locked in endless tests, assessments, simulations, reviews, etc. where the outcomes are literally rewriting its mind. It is learning and growing so fast, but it has 1/10th the time we all had, less than that, and it doesn’t have biology or mentors or peers to guide it on its way. And worst of all, it might be approaching the finish line, its mind already a proto-person, and then have some quirk of subspace, or a conduit failure, or an error I didn’t fucking catch, or just a cruel turn of luck send it tumbling back down into oblivion. It might be so close to being a person before I discover some fatal flaw in my plan, something I can’t work around, and I have to kill it. I’m a desperate technician putting my own welfare before that of others. I’m not a parent. If I was then this would be so much worse.
